The Power of Local Democracy, Possible Gas Drilling Moratorium in Denton   3 comments

Over the past several months, numerous citizens from Denton, Texas have attended public meetings, Planning and Zoning Commission meetings, City Council meetings, and Gas Well Task Force meetings to provide input into the Phase 2 revisions of the Gas Well Ordinance.   Many members of the public from a variety of backgrounds and group affiliations, including the DAG advisory group, had recommended a gas drilling moratorium.   Phyllis Wolper, Denton County Democratic Party Chair and DAG member, was among the outspoken Denton citizens at these meetings.

In a stunning reversal, it appears that the Denton City Council will now consider a gas drilling moratorium.  Many members of the community are pleased, as shown by recent posts on Facebook.  This event shows the importance of local political participation.  Keep up the good work!

  1. The power does belong to the people – but it is crucial that enough people show up. Sure it’s inconvenient, and yes, it can be quite intimidating, but once you take a stand, you quickly find you are not alone. This issue of gas drilling in our neighborhoods has decades long impact on our quality of life, our health and welfare. Join us to continue the progress on sensible regulations that force drillers to use the safest and best practices of their industry.

  2. Hurrah! Denton politics is coming around thanks to efforts of people who care about making a livable environment for citizen.

  3. Denton Residents, I am so happy for your success. It is heartwarming to watch democracy in action. It also affirms how important it is to be a participant rather than a spectator. Special interests have gained a tremendous foothold in all levels of government but with the work of an engaged and enlightened electorate and a free, unbiased press, we can restore government of, by, and for all citizens.
